The Blue Eagles will take a 7-0 record going into the 2nd round, while the     T Tamaraws drop to 4-3.
After a close 1st half that saw both teams play tight defense, the Blue Eagles were able to break the game open in the 3rd period.
Strong post defense from Ateneo forced the Tamaraws to settle for long range jumpers. FEU scored only 9 points in the quarter.
Meanwhile, Ateneo was able to do damage inside the paint, with Kirk Long, Kiefer Ravena and Greg Slaughter getting inside for lay-ups.
The Blue Eagles took a 47-35 lead going into the last period.
The game, however, got chippy in the 4th quarter.
After an RR Garcia lay-up cut the lead into single digits, 51-42, sophomore guard Terence Romeo was called for consecutive personal and technical fouls.
Emman Monfort made 3 out of 4 free throws, and in the ensuing Ateneo possession, Long hit a 3-pointer.
FEU’s Russell Escoto was later called for an unsportsmanlike foul as the referee caught him throwing an elbow into Slaughter’s throat.
Slaughter canned both free throws, and the Ateneo lead ballooned to 17, 59-42.
The Blue Eagles were in control from that point, cruising to an eventual 69-49 victory.
Ateneo’s super rookie Ravena was named player of the game, after leading the Eagles with 19 points and corralling 9 boards.
A sold-out crowd of 16,150 people saw both teams come out strong to open the game. With both teams playing strong defense, neither managed to get a lead of more than 5 points.
Ateneo only led by 4, 30-26, going into the 2nd half.
Reigning UAAP most valuable player RR Garcia once again struggled mightily from the field, along with FEU big man Aldrech Ramos.
